Talk about Signs...

There is a visual Mayhem of “Information” Signage which, more often than not, fails to accomplish its basic task˙ that is to inform !

Billions of signs fill our vision performing mundane communication duties trying to issue guidelines or even commands. Rarely do some of them stand out for their wit or elegance, whereas they usually do for their plain ugliness !

They are all designed with a purpose, even if they fail to fulfil it. Here is a garbled form of Graphic and Typographic language, which urgently needs a Universal Redesign.

But, as it happens, there are so many varieties, forms and categories, which makes this task a gargantuan design grief.

“SignTalk” means to provide a collection of photos with glaring examples of both bad and good Sign language. It’s not meant to be a critic on typography or graphic wit, but more of a personal look of the world of “Signs”. A medium I find to be extremely useful when done right and an eyesore which pollutes our already condensed field of view when done senseless.

If a sign -works- it rarely sticks out, if it works really well, it can literally stop you in your tracks. It can demand your attention or even make your day. I find it fascinating when people use it meaningfully to express a fact, or even make a small work of art.

In their purest form “Signs” (meaning signage) can be the one truly international form of communication. And that alone makes them a worthwhile design challenge.

The photos in “SignTalk” are mostly taken in Greece (with a few exceptions). Undoubtedly, they also provide a Hellenistic cultural mosaic, maybe an unintentional goal. Nevertheless, it has always been a fun project for me, one that I hope I will expand on and provide some unique visual distraction.

The best part is that I now share this visual walk with all of you, graphic design nuts and photo enthusiasts. A special thanks to the mobile platform that made this project possible “onuniverse.com”.
